Hurricane Irma is now a category 4 storm and is approaching the South-eastern side of Bahamas. As a result, the Bah Mar resort located on the island has decided to evacuate most of its guests. This decision came as a surprise because locals view resorts on the island as a place to shelter from the storm.
According to the Baha Mar’s Sands, Hurricane Irma is the most powerful vigorous storm from the Atlantic Ocean. Their primary concern is the safety of their guests. Hence, the decision to evacuate them.
Other Resorts Evacuate their Guests
Baha Mar is not the only resort that is evacuating its guests. Other resorts include Emerald Bay and Royal Bahamian. They had to close their resort in preparation for the storm that was heading in the island’s direction.
However, other places have not taken any measures to evacuate their guests. Atlantis Paradise Island Resort has the necessary steps in place to weather the storm. According to the president of Atlantis, Howard Karawan, the casino has been operating for 20 years in the tropics and is prepared to shelter their guests through storms.
The Damage to Bah Mar Resort
At the moment, the resort is under construction and was due to be done by 15 October. However, because of the approaching storm, it can be delayed even more than what it is at the moment. Prior to the storm, the delays caused by the bankruptcy trial that was happening. This will be costly for the Bah Mar because if they fail to meet the schedule, they will be charged $250k fine per day by the Bahamian government.
Bar Mar had a soft-opening back in April. At the time, only one part of the three parts of the resort could accept visitors. When construction is complete, the resort is meant to feature the Grand Hyatt, Rosewood Hotels Resorts and SLS Hotels and a 100 000-square foot casino. The casino will have 150 gaming table games and 1000 slot machines.
