A sportsbook can be referred to as a company that accepts wagers or bets on sporting events from the general public. Other commonly used terms for a sportsbook is a bookie, bookmaker or sports betting site. These technically mean the same thing and is often used interchangeably. A casino sportsbook simply refers to a bookie that operates in association with a casino.

Which Sports Can You Bet On?

Most sportsbooks cover a multitude of events that includes college sports. The popular sports to bet on are: American football, basketball, hockey, tennis, golf, boxing, MMA baseball, car racing and even horse racing.

Some sportsbooks even extend their services and gives people the opportunity to bet on non-sporting events like governmental elections and the Oscars.

How Do Sportsbooks Work

Essentially there are two types of sportsbooks – licensed and offshore casino sportsbooks. A licensed sportsbook refers to one that has legally obtained all the necessary certification to operate in said country. An offshore casino sportsbook refers to one that is not legally allowed to operate from within the country but are allowed to accept bets from offshore bettors.

Sports betting is a form of gambling and gambling unfortunately hasn’t been legalized everywhere yet. But bettors aren’t excluded completely. You can still enjoy betting on sports, only through an offshore sportsbook.

Casino sportsbooks are also ultimately businesses who need to make money. Most sportsbooks collect some of their income from your losing wagers. The commission collected from all losing bets is called vigorish, or “vig” for short.
